Take a glimpse into SA’s past

For only R80 per adult, visitors to vibrant Johannesburg can take a fascinating glimpse into South Africa’s past at one of its top museums – the Apartheid Museum.

Apartheidmuseum1Situated just off the the M1 in the south of the city, this museum must rank among the best in the country. Mention the word “museum”, and boring collections of dusty and dry exhibits often come to mind.

Not so with this museum.

From the moment you step in through the separate (“apart”) entrances that reflect the racial separateness of the apartheid era, you are plunged into yesterday’s world as you absorb the numerous fascinating exhibits.

Apartheidmuseum2One of the most effective of these is undoubtedly the hangman’s room (right), with its hanging rope nooses, a chilling reminder of the number of people who were hanged for treason and other offences during these years. Fortunately, democratic South Africa no longer has a death penalty.

Having gone through the mill of these difficult years, the visitor finally travels through the heady experiences of 1994, when the first democratic elections were held and President Nelson Mandela inaugurated. Few can fail to be moved by this journey!
